Mezcal Cantina

Charismatic Cesar Garibay runs a veritable home from Mexican home down Dalston way

The look, the music and the smell of this unique place in Dalston made me feel like I was back in Mexico. They even have Mexican television playing, the visual pleasures of rancheros and all. The place is trendy (how can it not be in Dalston?) without being OTT, the art adds a touch of sophistication to the otherwise charmingly cluttered cantina feel. And again... the music! Perfect selection of salsa and latin hits, just the way us Mexicans like it.

In terms of food – I couldn't stop eating the Enchiladas Verdes – they tasted just like the ones in my favourite restaurant in Mexico. Another highlight is the mole, a dish you don’t usually find in Mexican restaurants and for me is a sign of true authenticity. The crepas de huihacoche, also an inspired dish, which I would come back for.

Mezcal’s super hard-working owner Cesar Garibay ensures fantastic fresh ingredients in dishes that are well executed and beautifully presented. All the dishes look amazing. The service is engaging and personal, although come Saturday night and things are known to fall apart a little. Luckily by that time everyone is so euphoric on tequila that few care enough to make a fuss.

Cesar's passion about the food and hard work is eveident in all his does. A true credit to his people and his country!!
