Reggaeton Hits of the Decade

With the new year fastly approaching AND the end of yet another decade, that’s right - ten years have passed since the likes of Don Omar and his Virtual Diva - it is only fair that we curate the best reggaeton tunes of the decade. Taking it all the way back to 2010, here are some of the most celebrated tracks:

1. Daddy Yankee - La Despedida (2010)

It definitely wasn't an easy "farewell" for this merengue-like song to step down from the top of the charts in 2010. The most successful song of the Mundial álbum, la Despedida peaked at #4 in Billboard's Hot Latin Songs with it's latin horns and percussion.

2. Don Omar & Lucenzo - Danza Kuduro (2011)

Although 2020 might be just around the corner, Don Omar's Spanish/Portuguese-language tribute to the Angolan dance Kuduro, continues to be a worldwide club anthem. Also featured in the 2011 movie Fast Five, this infectious beat won the Billboard Latin Music Award for Latin Rhythm Airplay Song of the Year in 2011 and 2012.

3. Don Omar - Dutty Love ft Natti Natasha (2012)

We all know the power of certain songs to transport us either back in time or through space - to a remote island on the caribbean for instance... and that's exactly what this tropical pop song evoked. El Rey, the King of Kings decided to feature his mentee Natti Natasha on this track, which became number one on virtually every Latin dance and pop chart in America.

4. Daddy Yankee - Limbo (2013)

Spending thirteen weeks at number one on the Billboard Latin Pop Songs chart, and ranking the US Billboard Latin Hot Songs of 2013, this song had us all dancing along to Zumba Fitness before we even knew it. It was also featured as one of the tracklists on the motion-dance video game Just Dance in 2014.

5. Enrique Iglesias - Bailando ft. Descemer Bueno, Gente de Zona (2014)

It may have initially been written by the King of Latin Pop Enrique Iglesias and collaborator Descemer Bueno, but it definitely wouldn't have spent 41 consecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart, if cuban duo Gente de Zona had not added the final touch - A true multicultural mix of Spanish flamenco, Latin pop and Cuban-flavored reggaeton.

6. Nicky Jam & Enrique Iglesias - El Perdon (2015)

Although Enrique Iglesias may not have provided any of his creative songwriting on this track, he certainly managed to secure another viral hit with Nicky Jam's  "El Perdón" (Forgiveness). The song reached number 1 for over 30 weeks at Billboard Hot Latin Songs. This bittersweet symphony won a Latin Grammy Award, as it hit number-one in over 40 countries around the world. Filmed in Medellin's "Comuna 13" this song had every reggaeton lover asking for forgiveness.

7. Nicky Jam - Hasta el Amanecer (2016)

Como tu te llamas, yo no se...Nicky Jam became an audience favourite with this sexy reggaeton track video set in a launderrette. The song won the Billboard Music Award for Top Latin Song at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards. It also won the Urban Song of the Year and peaked at #1 on the Hot Latin Songs Chart for 18 weeks.

8. Luis Fonsi - Despacito ft. Daddy Yankee (2017)

It has undeniably become the all-time favourite Latin pop song. Giving birth to the so called “Despacito effect”, the fusion of latin pop and urban music gave way to the most streamed song of all time; as well the most-viewed clip on YouTube ever with a staggering 6.5 billion views. This song was stuck in everyones head, no matter how hard you tried...

9. Cardi B, Bad Bunny & J Balvin - I Like It (2018)

Now can we all take a moment to appreciate this homage to latin heritage which was listed by many publications as the best song of the year. Featuring latin trap star Bad Bunny, Colombian singer J Balvin and female rapper Cardi B, this Latino Gang did well by sampling 1960's boogaloo hit "I Like It Like That".  As proof, this fusion of latin trap with salsa, took home the Song of the Summer at the MTV Video Music Awards.

10. Daddy Yankee & Snow - Con Calma (2019)

Year in, Year out, it seems that Daddy Yankee is indeed "El Mejor De Todos Los Tiempos" (The Greatest of all Times). This dancehall track, which features an animoji (animated emoji) of a younger Daddy Yankee, is a reimagination of Canadian rapper Snow's 1992 single "Informer". With over 1.62 billion views on youtube, so far, it is the most watched music video of the year.
