THE JULY REGGAETON RECAP

In the true spirit of summer, it seems every single artist has taken the opportunity to venture outside and team up with one another. Each of the songs in this month’s recap capture contrasting emotions. From bold-bouncy dancefloor fillers to relaxing island melodies and even a reggaeton-bachata-esque fusion, artists are finding different ways to capture our attention. July seems to be the month of legends, as two highly acclaimed vocalists, Mariah Carey and Alejandro Sanz, are back with new material. This month also marks one year since the first ever ‘Reggaeton Recap’ and what a way to highlight it than through these five distinctive singles.

Mariah Carey & Luisa Sonza – Type Dangerous (The Brazil Funk Remix)

The MC a.k.a Mariah Carey has returned to the music world with her newest single ‘Type Dangerous’ which summarises her lifelong journey as a recording artist. This Brazil funk edit sees the songstress switching the silky R&B flow for a fast-paced, party-ready anthem. The single contains all the usual Baile funk elements including vocal percussion, intense drums and a feature from Luisa Sonza. Of course, this Brazilian star makes sure to flaunt her Mariah Carey knowledge singing, “Vai ficar obcecado” and “Toco no meu corpo” which reference the US performer’s smash hits ‘Obsessed’ and ‘Touch My Body’ - Well played.

Bad Gyal & Ozuna – Última Noche

Mid-Bikini-Badness-mode, Bad Gyal’s back again to add another gem to her discography, this time with a helping hand from Ozuna. The instrumental for this track fuses genres, having the smoothness of a bachata record paired with a slight dose of reggaeton embedded in the rhythm and melody. With Jorgie Milliano on production known for high-intensity songs like ‘Bellakeo’ and Cromo X assisting, who’s worked with Kali Uchis and C.Tangana, it becomes clear how this multi-genre production came to life. Both Bad Gyal and Ozuna are smitten as they profess, “Después de hoy me aferraré al pasa'o” with both explaining, “Pa' quedarme siempre en esta noche”.

Alejandro Sanz & Manuel Turizo - Cómo sería

One of Latin music’s most successful vocalists of all time, Alejandro Sanz, has dropped a collaboration with respected singer-songwriter Manuel Turizo to ask ‘Cómo sería’. The two pour their hearts out over an that could easily soundtrack the ending of a rom-com when the love interests realise they’re destined for each other. There’s inspiring drums and magical guitar strums as the two imagine potential situations to the question ‘Cómo sería’; “Si saliéramos todos los días de tu cama pa' la mía” or “Si rompiéramos todas las reglas aunque lleguen policías”.  What would it be like if these two did an album together? Bliss.

Emilia & Six Sex – Pasarella

A fiery and bold link-up from two empowering Latin artists, it’s hard to imagine anything different when the title of the track translates to ‘Catwalk’. Emilia introduces herself as “Con mis tacos de museo me paseo por Milán”, before admitting, “Visto marcas europeas que no sé no pronunciar”Feature credits for this one come from Six Sex, who is a prominent Perreo figure who is confident and self-assured,“Esta ropa cara la compré por face card”. The instrumental is a multi-hyphenate in itself being a bass-heavy, power-pop, house-inspired number, these two acts don’t let it steal their spotlight.

Myke Towers (ft. Omah Lay) – No Hay Break

As soon as you here “Hey Rvssian” you know you’re getting a banger and when you see a feature slot filled by an artist like Omah Lay, you just can’t go wrong. Both singers are infatuated by their newest dance partner with Towers confesses, “Llegaría hasta donde vive y entraría por la Ventana” while Lay owns up, “I’m running back to you when I’m done with those girls, I know you know it”. The instrumental is subtle but effective and fits the whole perspective of the Puerto Rican’s latest LP Island Boyz, as by listening alone you’re transported to a place of tranquillity.

Bonus Track:

Alejo x Lyanno – Gastar

There are ice-cold bars sung over trap beats and there’s ice dripped all over the duo, who are surrounded by and covered in an array of expensive jewellery in this single’s music video. Alejo wants to show off his lover as he sings, “Conmigo to' es lujureo pa' ponerte linda / Gafas Bottega Vene y fotitos pa'l Insta” while Lyanno is making sure his love interest is keeping up with all the trends, “Me compré Labubus pa' que los enganches en la Louis”. It was only a matter of time before the viral Labubus earned a name-drop.
