LATIN LONDONER 19: FERNANDO D GUIBERT - Artist

Fernando Guibert (father), was one of Argentina's most recognised poets and artists until his death in 1983. Fernando D Guibert (son) was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1957, where he taught and lectured before arriving in London in 1989. Since then he has lived and worked in London as an artist and lecturer in the History of Art, painting and etching. In 'Generations' - an exhibition of paintings, drawings and prints from two Argentine artists, the two come togehter in a nostalgic exhibition that spans two generations of expressive oil paintings, watercolours, drawings and prints, some of which have never been shown in Great Britain before. Here Fernando (son) tells us about the 'things that matter' to him...

I inherited from my mother to be kind to people. From my father: to love art and be curious about everything.

The most useful piece of advice I've been given is "Follow your heart and your own nature." (Father)

The book I most admire is The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus. He wrote about the absurdity of man's life and the pholosophical rejection of our leap to God, therefore we must look with intensity at life itself. Free from the hope of eternity we must confront ourselves and find a meaning to our lives. It confirmed my personal views on the world.

'Generations' at The Crypt gallery

The film I would choose for its strength and beauty is “12 Angry Men” directed by Sidney Lumet. This film is a courtroom drama and portrays brilliantly the conflicts between people and the search for truth. I also enjoyed the way the film used a range of personalities involved and their psychological interaction.

The most influential figure in shaping my art is Francisco Goya.

An underrated virtue: Honesty

An overrated vice: Arrogance

The event that has had most impact on my life is the 70s in Argentina.

What I most like about London is it's cultural and artistic life.

My favourite place in London to hang out is The West End.

My favourite word: Art

The word I most dislike is Fanaticism

My favourite question? There would be many questions.

I believe in our capacity to achieve something regardless of difficulties and the young generation’s hopes for a better future.

I am sickened by the inequality of the world and how we let it happen.

If I could go back in time I'd go to Classical Greece.
