Colombia-based Avianca filed for bankruptcy after failing to secure government aid to pay off its debts.

Avianca Holdings, Latin America's second-largest airline, has filed for bankruptcy after failing to meet a bond payment deadline, while its pleas for coronavirus aid from Colombia's government have so far been unsuccessful. If it fails to come out of bankruptcy, Bogota-based Avianca would be one of the first large carriers worldwide to go under as a result of the pandemic, which has crippled world travel. Avianca, which is one of the world's oldest airlines, has not flown a regularly scheduled passenger flight since late March and most of its 20,000 employees have gone without pay through the crisis.

Chile scientists create coronavirus 'smell test'

Researchers in Chile are developing equipment to check asymptomatic coronavirus patients by testing to see if they have lost sense of smell. Scientists in Chile have developed a test that could help diagnose coronavirus patients earlier and for a fraction of the price. One of the symptoms of COVID-19 is the loss of the sense of smell among patients who do not show any other signs of the virus. Researchers from a university in Santiago have developed an aroma test kit.

Bolivian protesters broadcast demonstrations live on social media due to information blackout by the regime.

Bolivian citizens protested in many cities on Monday against coup-born government and its health crisis management. Residents of El Alto, Cochabamba, La Paz, and other cities demonstrated in the streets demanding Jeanine Añez's removal from office. Protesters manifested their discontent with the de facto administration by calling for the removal of the regime and their financial backers. Protesters also called for a general election date and manifested their rejection of transgenic seeds of use.

Three More Mercenaries Arrested in Venezuela With Ties to Foiled Coup Plot

Venezuela’s government announced Sunday that its Special Forces apprehended three mercenaries with ties to the foiled May 3 plot in the northern state of Aragua, which borders Caracas. The detainees were identified as First Lieutenant Jairo Betemy, Army Second Sergeant Franco Jonathan, and Bolivarian National Guard (GNB) First Sergeant Evan Rincon, who are now in the custody of the corresponding authorities. The arrest of these deserters is part of the deployment carried out by the state security forces to capture the mercenaries involved in the failed operation, which aimed to carry out a coup in the nation and kidnap President Nicolas Maduro.

Mexican border town uses ‘sanitizing tunnels’ to disinfect US visitors from Covid-19

Authorities in Nogales, Sonora, are hoping to reduce chances of bringing the virus over from Arizona, one of the states most affected. Fears of foreigners bringing infectious disease into the country have resulted in enhanced border control checkpoints and the use of disinfectant spray to sanitize human beings.
