Copper price surges due to global shortage

The price of copper is shooting up due to a global shortage of the crucial metal. Production has been hit hard as coronavirus cases continue to rise among mine workers in Chile. The country is the world's largest exporter of the metal which is essential in almost all electronic products and manufacturing.

Colombia: Night March Against Army Abuse and Gov't Inaction

Protesters claimed justice for an Indigenous girl who was sexually abused by seven soldiers. Colombia’s human rights defenders, workers, and students Tuesday performed a peaceful torchlight march in Bogota against police brutality and the killing of social leaders.

Bank of England blocking release of Venezuelan gold, court hears

Claims that the Bank of England is unlawfully blocking the release of 31 tonnes of gold valued at nearly $1bn(£805m) and intended to combat the coronavirus in Venezuela have been heard in the high court this week. The bars are among the 400,000 bars of gold held in the Bank’s vaults, but there is a political dispute about their rightful owner. The leftwing and heavily sanctioned government of Nicolás Maduro claims the bars are being held hostage under the direction of the British government in a bid to curry favour with the US.

Argentina and Brazil crops threatened by locust swarm

Brazil and Argentina are monitoring the movements of a large swarm of locusts, which has been eating its way through crops in the region. The insects, which can cover a distance of 150km (93 miles) in a day, have already travelled from Paraguay to Argentina and it is feared Brazil and Uruguay could be next. Brazil has told farmers to be alert to the possible arrival of the locusts. The insects have already moved through the Argentine provinces of Santa Fé and Formosa, where they caused damage to crops of corn, sugar cane, wheat and oats.

Former Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor has had his contract at Paraguayan club Olimpia terminated by mutual consent. The 36-year-old Togolese striker had played only twice for the Asuncion club since signing in February, and had not scored in the time before the global coronavirus pandemic shut down the league.
