Argentinians protest in Buenos Aires against government decisions
Argentina is seeing the effects of the economic pressure caused by the coronavirus pandemic, sparking anti-government demonstrations in the capital. Some rallied on behalf of farmers across the country, but many more are unhappy with the lockdown. Argentina is struggling with recession and inflation and is negotiating with creditors to restructure its foreign debt.
Brazil bows to investor pressure and bans setting fires in Amazon
Brazil's government announced on Thursday it planned to ban setting fires in the Amazon for 120 days, in a meeting with global investors to address their rising concerns over destruction of the rainforest. Vice President Hamilton Mourao told reporters that he invited investors in the video conference to help finance conservation of the forest, but he said they did not commit any funds and want to see results first. Investors have warned they will put investments in Brazil on hold, or even pull existing ones out, if the government of right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro does not act to protect the world's largest tropical rainforest.
Peru's president calls general election for April 2021
Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra has called for a general election to be held in April next year when he will step down as the country's leader. His announcement on Wednesday came after the Congress had discussed the possibility of postponing the elections due to the coronavirus outbreak. Bolivians Take to the Streets to Protest Against the Añez Government
Bolivia's Workers Central (COB) called for tens of thousands of people to hold a mass protest in several cities against the coup-born regime led by Jeanine Añez. "The Bolivian people, the Indigenous groups, and educational organizations raised their voice of protest today," the COB Secretary-General Juan Carlos Huarachi said in La Paz. One of the demonstrators' main calls is the definitive confirmation of the general elections for September 6.
Aztec palace's remains uncovered off Mexico City's main Zócalo plaza
The remains of an ancient Aztec palace have been discovered under a stately building in Mexico City. During renovations at the building off the capital's central Zócalo plaza, workers found basalt slab floors. The floors were part of an open space in the palace of Aztec ruler Axayácatl, Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) said. The palace was also used as the home of Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés after the fall of the Aztec empire.
