Lorena Andrea was born to a Spanish father and a Colombian mother in London. Coming from an immigrant household, despite "not seeing people like me on TV," she was single-minded and determined enough to start acting classes at seven, get her first agent at eight and, by 17, had decided "that this was what I wanted." She looks back on her trajectory and sees every step as “building blocks to get to where I am right now.”
On finding out about getting her biggest role to date in the live action remake of The Little Mermaid, “It took me a while to process. Rob Marshall, the director, told me in person, so it felt really special. It was my first major studio film, and I was so excited.”
Lorena is always seeking opportunities to expand her craft and her experience. “When I look for a role, I always look for something that can teach me something new,” she explains. “I love to play roles that demand a lot of me…something meaty, dynamic, layered.”
Lorena’s latinidad is fundamental to her performances. When she plays people who weren’t initially written as Latinas, she seeks to enrich the roles and “convey the many voices of many people.” Gaining an intimate understanding of her character's individuality and complexity is her priority.
Having seen real progress in the industry since her career began, Lorena is armed with optimism for the future and a strong sense of self. "The scene has changed massively, especially in the last five years or so. I had never worked with another Latino actor until two or three years ago.”
Lorena's next project (which she can't yet mention!) “has been in the works for a while, and I think people will be surprised”
