The masterminds behind some of the soundtracks of Netflix’s La Casa de Las Flores and Élite shone at The Waiting Room in London on Saturday, 25 January. Fans screamed in ecstasy seeing their favorite rising, London-based electro-pop duo consisting of vocalist Soleil and producer Igor waltz on stage ready to charm the audience with their music.
The soothing voice of Soleil immediately captivated all. Soleil avoided eye contact with the crowd as she was submerged in the lyrics that she knew by heart. As time went by, space became more and more crowded as all 120 tickets had been sold, striking a sense of pride in REYKO. “Spinning Over You” - 2018 viral hit in Spain- was sung by all to the point of almost complete unison drawing a smirk out of Igor. Unfortunately, while singing one of the most well-known parts of the song, the microphone cable slipped off the mic, leaving Soleil confused and lost. The setback was accepted with much love and encouragement from the audience as they saw her frustration and embarrassment.
The cable was quickly put back in place, and the concert resumed with cheers and hoots.
Their flare and their DIY approach to music -as they write, produce, and record everything from their home studio- is easily conveyed in their lyrics as they write from past experiences. This unique connection with their art, filled the room with excitement, making those who don’t speak Spanish sway back-and-forth in bliss and curiosity.
The concert continued, and, to the astonishment of most, the Spanish artists surprised audiences with two new songs sung in Spanish. Most of REYKO’s songs are in ‘Spanglish’, a combination of Spanish and English. Still, the band decided to venture out of their comfort zone and introduce new material in their native tongue, which received positive feedback from the Spanish crew at the venue.
Until curtain call, the band interacted with the audience as the stage was close to ground level. This intimate setting worked well with REYKO’s music style and approach as they, from time to time, would stop and dedicate songs to one of their die-hard fans and thank them for their unwavering dedication.
The two artists started making music together as the final project for Igor’s master’s degree in music production at the University of West London. Soleil is a former osteopath, and Igor is a former tennis player who decided to switch to sports for music. REYKO spent the large part of 2018 touring culminating in a nomination for the Best New Spanish Artist at the LOS40 Awards. A year later, they started setting the tone for the following chapter by releasing “Lose Myself” in August, followed by “Hierba Mala” and “Don’t Mention My Name.” The three songs will be part of their debut album scheduled to be released mid-2020.
