When it comes to NY salsa, rare were the bands that could compete with Típica 73 in their heyday. One of the most progressive, experimental but also heartfelt bands from the scene they had some of the most acclaimed singers of the salsa royalty: Adalberto Santiago, Camilo Azuquita, Jose Alberto “El Canario” and Tito Allen. The level of musicianship was astounding, often improvising and crossing easily over to jazz, with some of the most renowned musicians of the time such as Sonny Bravo, Alfredo de la Fé, Nelson González, Nicky Marrero, Leopoldo Pineda, Johnny Rodriguez and Orestes Vilato. Tipica was the first US-based salsa orchestra to record in Cuba and recorded nine albums all of them considered classics. It's legacy still lives on across the dance floors around world. Here we pay tribute to one of the greatest salsa bands that ever existed. No doubt within minutes of hearing each tune you'll be itching to get to that dancefloor!
