Top 10 Female Reggaeton Artists

We may have come a long way since the days of overt misogyny in Urban Latin Music, but the industry is still dominated by men and their narrative. 2019, however, was a big year for breakthrough female artists who continue to rise in 2020. Always recognising the work of trailblazer Ivy Queen, whose 2003 anthem 'Yo Quiero Bailar, 'La Diva', “La Caballota,” crowned her the undisputed “Queen of Reggaeton”, here is a list of 10 fast rising artists championing female empowerment in the Urban Latin scene.

Karol G

Hailed by many as the new queen of reggaeton, Carolina Giraldo better known by her stage name as Karol G, has been making a name for herself for over a decade. Born in The City of Eternal Spring, Medellin, this singer and songwriter started her musical journey when she participated as a child (at the age of seven) on the Colombian version of X-Factor. But It wasn’t until 2012, when she debuted next to fellow reggaeton singer Reykon “El Líder" with the single 301 that she started to gain widespread success. Although her career has said to have made a breakthrough in the rest of Latin America when she collaborated with Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny on Ahora Me Llama, last year she rocketed global charts with the anglo-latin collaboration Tusa featuring female rapper Nicki Minaj.  Her latest single Follow, which features Puerto Rican trapstar and boyfriend Anuel AA was released last week and already has over 23 million views on Youtube. Some of her previous collaborations include with stars like Nicky Jam, Daddy Yankee, J Balvin, Cosculluela & Ozuna.

Natti Natasha

This 33-year-old dominican bombshell, Natalia Alexandra Gutierrez rose to fame when she decided to move to the Bronx at the age of 18 to pursue her musical career. In 2017, the “Big Boss” Daddy Yankee released the song Otra Cosa featuring Natasha, but it was her single Criminal, with Ozuna, which became her first global hit as the most watched music video of 2017, reaching the top five of the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart. In April 2018, she teamed up with fellow female artist Becky G on Sin Pijama, and surprise surprise, the video became the most watched female song of the year, peaking at number three on the Hot Latin Songs chart.
