Brazilian Workers' Party Ask for Impeachment Against Bolsonaro

The Workers' Party (PT) of Brazil will present a formal petition to initiate an impeachment against the far-right President Jair Bolsonaro for his mismanagement in the face of the health crisis that the country is going through due to COVID-19. In a statement, the left-wing party reported that its executive commission "decided to submit to the Chamber of Deputies a collective impeachment petition against President Jair Bolsonaro." The PT also noted that the request will also be supported by social movements, civil society organizations, and legal entities.

Covid-19 cases in Brazil surpass Italy amid surge in Latin America

Confirmed Covid-19 cases in Brazil have surpassed the total in Italy and are surging in Mexico and Peru as Latin America struggles to contain its fast-growing coronavirus outbreak. Brazil announced nearly 15,000 new infections on Saturday, taking its total to more than 230,000, the fourth-largest confirmed caseload after the US, Russia and the UK. Its true number of infections is feared to be much greater, given that the country had carried out fewer than a 500,000 tests by the start of last week, compared with about 1.9m in Spain and Italy.

Coronavirus: Health workers face violent attacks in Mexico

As of 28 April, there have been at least 47 attacks against health workers, particularly nurses, in the country, the Mexican government says. And the authorities recognise the true figure may be higher - reports on social media of discrimination range from nurses stopped from getting on buses to doctors assaulted by relatives of Covid-19 patients. Some of the attacks appear to have been motivated by a misguided attempt to disinfect health workers.

Coronavirus: Crew on virus-hit cruise ship allowed to disembark in Uruguay

Crew members from the coronavirus-hit cruise ship Greg Mortimer have been allowed to disembark in Uruguay, after almost two months at sea. Of the more than 60 crew members, 36 tested positive for the virus. The ship's passengers had already disembarked last month and flown home. Meanwhile, two crew members became seriously ill with Covid-19 and were hospitalised. One, who was from the Philippines, later died. The other recovered and was flown home to Poland. After disembarking on Tuesday, crew members who had tested positive were taken to a hotel in Montevideo to be quarantined, while the others were taken to a separate hotel in the city.

Spanish regions stockpiling medical supplies in preparation for new Covid-19 outbreaks

Procurement officials have to report their reserves to the central government as part of the national deescalation plan. After an initial scramble to purchase hard-to-find medical supplies amid the coronavirus pandemic, Spain’s health authorities have reported somewhat easier procurement conditions and a growing reserve of equipment to deal with future spikes.
