1. Ana de Armas is nominated for best actress for her performance as Marilyn Monroe in the drama film Blonde. Her work to reincarnate the late actress is breath-taking, as she looks remarkable. This film tells a fictional biopic of Marilyn Monroe’s most important life moments and how her life ended. Armas has been nominated for many other awards for this performance. Her performance includes a scene, where she is casually raped  in an audition, a trauma many, if not most actresses, had to endure for decades, before #metoo arrived.

2. Guillermo del Toro is back,  this time with a different form of film that has found our younger selves’ hearts as he recreates the story of Pinocchio. This version differs greatly from the Disney version in that it focuses on the actual story and a glimpse into the Mexican film director's mind. Nominated as the best animated movie, this one has already taken home the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards. This will be Del Toro's third victory.

3. Argentina 1985 has shown its potential by taking all the awards home for best film not on the English language. Director Santiago Mitre digs deep into the most important trial in Argentina by telling the story of a group of lawyers who are facing the deadliest dictatorship’s crimes to bring justice to the victims as the odds are against them. Argetina 1985 depicts the real consequences that Latin American countries have faced and forgotten. As it has won the latest awards, this film commemorates our Latino past. Check out our interview with director Mitre and actor Ricardo Darín.

4. Mexican director and producer Alfonso Cuaron is looking for his fifth win at the Academy Awards, but this time as the producer for best short film Le Pupille. Italian filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher tells the story of a young girl studying in a strict Catholic boarding school just in the midst of World War 2. This story explores how these girls desire freedom and the changes around them. Cuaron has won 4 Academy Awards with Gravity in 2013 and acclaimed Roma in 2018.
