With my headphones blazing Sech’s latest album “42” on the London underground, the raw Panamanian beats and flow with a mixture of vocals transport me to a paradise where I’m feeling an array of Latin Caribbean vibes.
Accompanying the anticipated album, Sech has also released a short documentary that gives the listeners insight into the idea behind the album. His captivating voice takes us through the journey of his childhood, starting right at the beginning; Daddy Yankee music blaring in the background, the scene is in the streets of Panama and then Sech recalls the special moment when his first bought speakers, and the crushing moment they were stolen from him. Sech makes it clear that he wants to remember his humble beginnings and inspirations and share it with his audience.
“42” gets its name from the shirt of African-American baseball player Jackie Robinson and Panamanian pitcher Mariano Rivera, both of whom Sech expresses a lot of admiration for. 42 is also the angel number which represents progress and stability, showing you that you are on the right path and that your plans will bring joy and success.
The first track ‘Pata Abajo’ starts the album strong with a beat that has you dancing on the spot and yearning for a party, featuring Wisin Y Yandel, the track is brilliant because Sech brings his new school vibe and dreamy vocals along with Wisin Y Yandel’s staple sound, unifying the new reggaeton with the old.
We have all heard his previously released singles “911” and “Te Acuerdas” ft the legendary Arcangel which are absolute bangers! Track number 7, “Playa”, featuring Nicky Jam and Rauw Alejandro, starts off as a soft and romantic beat and then the dance inducing beat drops and we find ourselves involuntarily moving again.
The album noticeably only has three tracks with featuring artists, proving that he is a musical force on his own, “Que Somos” is the third track of the album is an example of his brilliancy, it’s one of those songs that will have you singing at the top of your voice along with questioning the status of your current relationship. “Sal Y Perrea” is the penultimate track to the album and it is an uplifting dembow for the ladies!
In the documentary, Sech relays his love for playing baseball with his friends when he was young, but his biggest passion beyond everything was always music. Fast forward to this moment where his hard work has paid off, a truly inspiring story along with this fantastic album in which he elevates, yet stays grounded and true to his roots.
