Sofia Monreal - Performing Artist
Sofia won many votes for her critically-acclaimed performance in 'Ay Carmela!' at the Cervantes Theatre. One of the judges described her as "electric on stage. She carries her role with conviction and panache. She has a particular eye for humour and her body language speaks volumes. It was a very entertaining and vibrant performance." Judges also considered Sofia’s impressive career's work in theatre and film as an experienced, well-rounded bi-lingual performer whose work always flows.
"Verde, Agua y Luna" by Maria Estevez-Serrano - Theatrical Production of the Year
Verde, Agua y Luna is set in the final minutes before the death of Spanish writer Federico Garcia Lorca. The Action, which is woven together from his plays and poems, takes place in the writer's prison cell. The play is performed in Spanish -with comments and subtitles in English projected in the background- so none of the power and music of Lorca's original text is lost. Verde (Green), Agua (Water) and Luna (the Moon) are the poet and dramatist's three recurring images, an understanding of which is critical to unlocking his work and imagination.
“Pain and Glory” by Pedro Almodovar - Film of the Year
PAIN AND GLORY depicts a series of encounters where Salvador Mallo (Antonio Banderas), a film director in physical decline, reacquaints himself with people from his past. Starring Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz, Pain and Glory talks about creation; about the difficulty of separating it from one's own life, and about the passions that give it meaning and hope. In recovering his past, Salvador finds the urgent need to recount it, and in that need he also finds his salvation.
